1. Current processing status
RentPal's payment integration is currently operating in the payment partner's test mode. Until we announce a switch to live mode, no real money moves through the platform. Anything shown as paid in test mode is a test transaction.
2. Who calculates the amount
Rent invoices are generated on our servers from the tenancy record. The rent amount, any platform fees, the fee breakdown, the total and the currency are all computed and stored server-side. The amount you are charged is taken from that stored invoice — it cannot be changed from your browser.
3. How a payment flows
- You open an invoice from your dashboard and start checkout.
- RentPal creates a pending payment record with a unique reference and sends you to Flutterwave's hosted checkout page.
- You enter card or bank details on Flutterwave's page. RentPal never sees or stores your card details.
- Flutterwave notifies RentPal of the outcome. We verify the notification's signature, then independently call Flutterwave's verification endpoint server-to-server to confirm the transaction, its amount and its currency.
- Only if the verified amount and currency match the stored invoice is the payment marked successful, the invoice marked paid, a receipt issued and the landlord ledger entry created.
- Duplicate notifications for the same transaction are ignored; a payment can only settle once.
4. Pending and failed payments
A payment stays pending until verification succeeds. If you close the checkout page or the transaction fails, the invoice remains open and you can start checkout again — a new unique reference is used each time. A failed attempt does not create a receipt and does not activate a tenancy.
5. Receipts and records
Every settled payment produces a numbered receipt visible in your dashboard, and a corresponding earnings entry for the landlord showing the gross amount, platform fees and net amount.
6. Refunds
There is currently no automated refund mechanism in the product. RentPal cannot reverse a settled payment from within the platform today. Where a refund is appropriate — for example a duplicate charge or a payment made for a tenancy that did not proceed — it must be raised manually through our Support & Disputes page and handled outside the platform, with the payment partner and the landlord as applicable. We do not guarantee a refund outcome, and we do not hold rent in escrow.
7. No escrow
RentPal does not operate an escrow or trust account. Settled rent is recorded against the landlord's ledger; RentPal does not hold funds as a stakeholder between tenant and landlord.
8. Chargebacks and fraud
Chargebacks are handled by the payment partner under their rules. Accounts used for fraudulent payments may be suspended.
